Commercial offer to the fore as Kansai opens budget terminal

JAPAN. Kansai International Airport inaugurated its new Terminal 2 on 28 October – the first full-fledged budget terminal in Japan.

Terminal 2 (also known as the Low Cost Carrier Terminal, or LCCT) is the base for start-up LCC Peach Aviation, which flies the main domestic routes in Japan as well as Kansai to Seoul, Hong Kong and Taipei.

The Asahi Shimbun reported that the terminal experienced busy passenger traffic following its opening.
Keiichi Ando, President of airport operator New Kansai International Airport Co. (NKIAC), told guests at the opening ceremony: “Today brings the launch of the age of low-cost carriers. The day marks a major change in the airport model.”

Kansai Airport Agency, a division of NKIAC, operates the terminal’s 700sq m duty free store with Japan Airport Terminal Co (JATCo) managing the store.

The store features core duty free categories such as fragrances, cosmetics, liquor and tobacco. It features a testing area for fragrances and cosmetics, and a tasting area for liquor as part of a push for customer interaction. Peach Aviation has own-brand boutiques in both domestic and international areas of T2, trading as Fuschia by Peach.

Peach Aviation said in a press statement that its shops “will offer a collection of goods that are both fashionable and tasteful, expressing the Peach brand, represented by ‘cute & cool’.”

Fuchsia by Peach offers a variety of goods including cosmetics, souvenirs and snacks and beverages.

A full report on Kansai International Airport’s LCC terminal appears in the October print of The Moodie Report.

The international airside zone also hosts Irodori souvenirs and Skyteria (snack foods), while domestic airside has applause (souvenirs) and Sorateria (snack foods).

Landside tenants include convenience store Seven Eleven; applause with souvenirs, books and pharmacy; a Ginza Lion Departure general restaurant, and café outlet Caffè and Bar Pronto.

NKIAC spokesperson Norihisa Tagawa said that the airport anticipates that T2 will further lift commercial income, which is already showing increases from FY 2011.

NKIAC has commenced plans to build a third terminal to cater to international LCCs. The airport’s medium-term plan provides for a 30,000sq m terminal that will open in 2015.
