CNSC and HTDF trading again in Sanya; only one asymptomatic case reported in Hainan

CHINA. CNSC and Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex, which have been closed since August 4 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Hainan province, reopened for business today.

This follows yesterday’s big breaking news that Sanya authorities had lifted temporary static management restrictions across the whole region from noon Hainan time. No new confirmed COVID cases were reported in the province yesterday, though there was one asymptomatic infection (see official figures below).

China Duty Free Group is preparing to reopen its CDF Mall and Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex operations in coming days.

“We are open from 12:00-1900 today,” a CNSC spokeswoman told us, a hugely welcome development after a 43-day suspension of business. This followed a successful application to the authorities a day earlier.

CDFG confirmed that its Haitang Bay complex is yet to open. That will be a matter of days at most, we understand reliably.

CDFG has resumed businesses at Sanya Phoenix International Airport in addition to its operations at Haikou Meilan International Airport and Haikou Mova Mall. The GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS stores have been trading for some weeks after sporadic closures.

The crisis has devastated the island’s tourism and travel retail sectors. The reopenings will hopefully allow for a solid Golden Week holiday period, which traditionally kicks off in Hainan with a busy final week in September.
