CHILDREN’S PRODUCTS: Russ Berrie approach bears dividends

UK. Russ Berrie has reported a +25% increase in its inflight business for the first half year of 2003 compared to the same period in 2002.

“Some 70% of our inflight business is with UK airlines, which have not been nearly as badly affected by international politics or SARS,” explained duty free director Garry Stoner. “We’ve also picked up additional listings with new airlines Flyjet and Astraeus.”

Stoner said airlines continue to choose Russ Berrie products for their quality, reputation and the company’s flexibility in working directly with operators to offer exclusive product lines.

BA for example, is now listing Amy Bear along with the best selling Wilbur (pictured), celebrating 100 years of powered flight. With their flying hats, fleeces, goggles and white scarves, the bears sell at £12 (US$18.77) each. Since listing both bears, sales have reached significantly more than budget. “Amy’s sales alone have been more than double that of the original Wilbur bear, the new Wilbur bear sales have been higher too,” continued Stoner. “Both bears become more appealing as a pair.”

BA is also the official airline for the Rugby World Cup and will be listing the official World Cup Bear, again provided by Russ. English and Australian team colours are available (white and gold respectively). The bears are selling onboard for £10 (US$15.64).
