RUSSIA. Sheremetyevo International Airport has unveiled an exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space.
‘Our Gagarin’ is supported by Moscow’s Museum of Cosmonautics and the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documents.
The Terminal D exhibition centres on Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut and the first human to journey into outer space. His Vostock 1 capsule orbited the earth on 12 April 1961.

The exhibition features photographs of Gagarin’s preparation for the flight, events on the historic day and his later visits throughout Europe, Asia and South America.
2021 has been declared the Year of Science and Technology in Russia and the Our Gagarin exhibition is one of several joint events dedicated to the Russian rocket and space industry. Further exhibitions will feature equipment used by Russian cosmonauts and mock-ups of spacecraft.
Sheremetyevo International Airport describe the highlighting of Russia’s scientific and technical achievements as one of its most important Corporate Social Responsibility programmes.
Videos of the history and development of the Soviet and Russian space industry are featured throughout the airport along with images of Gagarin and other cosmonauts, including Alexei Leonov, the first person to conduct a spacewalk in March 1965.
The space theme is echoed in passenger lounges and other areas which are designed and named to echo Russia’s space exploration.
