Cees van Dooren captures Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup

UAE. Long-time Dubai resident Cees van Dooren captured the 26th annual Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup in style last week after two top-class rounds of golf hosted by the world’s leading travel retailer at a single location.

The two-day event, one of the social highlights of the travel retail industry calendar, saw 100 players compete. Round one was played at Emirates Golf Club and round two at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.

The players enjoyed the atmosphere of friendly competition, and the social interaction made it a good meeting place for those involved in the duty free industry.”

Van Dooren scored 80 stableford points over the two days, winning by five points from Dermot Davitt. Day one leaders were Ian Hill and Jihad El Sibai. Van Dooren said: “Firstly I would like thank Colm and Dubai Duty Free for once again putting on a superb competition. My wife (Maria) and I have been coming to this event for many years now and to eventually have won this trophy is a huge honour for me.”

In the Ladies Division, Maria van Dooren was crowned the overall local winner with a two-day total of 48 while a total of 55 ensured victory in the visitor section for Charmaine Bruwer. 54 points from Jeanie Archer saw her collect the overall runner-up prize, beating Vicki Smyth by one single shot.

In the Senior’s Division, Gunther Becker claimed the super-super senior title after a strong two-day total of 72 points. Conor Bartley was super-senior winner while Peter Dige claimed the senior prize after an outstanding total of 73 points.

At Emirates Golf Club on day one, the Men’s Division saw some impressive performances. Among the most notable came from Michael McGinley who was awarded the best gross score, Jonathan Holland who claimed day one’s first place and Dennis Marnane, who was second. At Dubai Creek on day two, James Finnigan was awarded the best gross score, James Kfouri day two first place and Jean-Stefan Camerini day two second place.

Among the women, Karen Mounib and Barbara Foley were awarded the day one ladies title and runner-up trophies, while Imelda Gleeson claimed the day one best gross prize.

Naima Maya won day two with second place on day two won by Joan Legnar. Amarjeet Radia was presented with the day two best gross prize.

Individual prizes for nearest the pin went to Barbara Foley, Gerry Crawford and Patrick Dorais on day one, with the longest drive won by Karen Mounib, Charmaine Bruwer, James Kfouri and Antoin Breen. On day two, Naima Maya, Joan Legnar, Michael McGinley and Khalid Al Halyan were awarded for their accurate tee shots with the nearest the pin prizes. Both longest drive prizes for women were claimed by Naima Maya, while Jean-Stephane Camerini won both prizes among the men.
