Bucharest Airport plans large space for commercial at new terminal

ROMANIA. Bucharest Airports has said that the forthcoming investment in a second terminal at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport will allow it to add up to 15,000sq m of commercial space.

The state-run operator recently said it had bought all the land it required to launch construction work on the new terminal project. The RON4.75 billion (€974 million) investment is expected to at least double the airport’s capacity.

The new terminal is expected to open in around five years, though uncertainty remains about the timeline in the face of COVID-19

“Bucharest Airports is planning to locate new shops and restaurants in the future passenger terminal,” Director General Cosmin Peşteşan told The Moodie Davitt Report. “The 600 hectares … [of] land are to accommodate both airside and landside infrastructure and our new terminal will, indeed, include new commercial areas.”

The “terminal was planned to be developed in stages, therefore, commercial spaces [are to be included] as well. Because this is sensitive information, we cannot communicate the exact [data but we can] … inform you about the [possible] scenarios,” he said.

“In the basic scenario, at a terminal area of 55,000sq m, we can take into account a commercial area of approximately 4,000 to 5,000sq m for the first stage, [translating into] a commercial area of approximately 15,000sq m for an area of 100,000sq m of the new terminal,” according to Peşteşan.

Asked how the airport company would select new operators for the planned shops and restaurants, Peşteşan confirmed that there will be a tender process. He said that the initial plan for the construction of the terminal foresaw completion of the project within five years. But he noted that due to the ongoing pandemic, it was impossible for the company to communicate a definite completion date.

The airport currently has 14 shops and 19 food & beverage outlets in its departures zone and one café in international arrivals.

The airport is located in Otopeni, a municipality north of the country’s capital Bucharest. In 2019, the airport served about 14.73 million passengers.
