Better news from Hainan as Haikou duty free stores reopen; Sanya stores still closed but case numbers falling fast

CHINA.  All Haikou downtown duty free stores have reopened today as the authorities assert growing control over the recent COVID-19 outbreak in Hainan.

Spokespeople for China Duty Free Group (CDFG), GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS all confirmed their welcome reopenings to The Moodie Davitt Report.

“We are back to business today,” a leading Haikou duty free retailer told The Moodie Davitt Report this morning. “We shouldn’t have any more lockdown for Haikou.”

Local authorities reported 205 new locally transmitted cases yesterday (22 August), well down on recent days (see table below). The numbers exclude asymptomatic cases.

Most new cases remain centered around Sanya but even there the situation is improving. While the shops run by CDFG in Haitang Bay and CNSC and HTDF in Sanya City remain closed, retailers are optimistic of an early return to business.

“The trend for confirmed cases is going down,” a senior Sanya travel retail executive told The Moodie Davitt Report this morning.
