INDIA. Mumbai Airport has underlined its commitment to environmental causes with the release of its 2018 Sustainability Report.
The report is published biennially by GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) – the operator of Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
MIAL said Mumbai is the only airport in Asia Pacific to publish a sustainability report in line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. It added that it is the only airport operator in India to make a sustainability report public.
The operator explained that sustainability is ingrained in the airport’s core business strategy and a key part of its goal to become the best airport in the world.
MIAL said the airport’s sustainability programme addresses issues including climate change, safety & security, and environment & health.
The Report’s theme is Coming Together for a Sustainable Tomorrow. It covers FY2016-17 and FY2017-18.
Despite its highest-ever traffic levels, the airport has seen significant success with its sustainability programmes.
Since 2016, a solar power plant has been installed, increasing the airport’s use of renewable energy by +200%. Plans are in place to extend this further, said MIAL.
Compared to the previous two financial years, there was a -16% reduction in direct greenhouse gas emissions.
93% of total procurement is now from local suppliers, said the operator.
The Report also notes that INR 38 million (US$538,650) has been spent on CSR initiatives during this period, and that 94,986 hours have been given to staff training programmes.
MIAL commented: “Through the report, Mumbai Airport has demonstrated its commitment towards meaningful participation for achieving sustainable development goals.”
