ARI and Lagardère Capital win Midfield Terminal Building duty free contracts

“Aer Rianta International and Lagardère Capital came up with ideas that will set new benchmarks in airport retail”H.E. Ali Majed Al Mansoori, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Airports

UAE. In major breaking news, Abu Dhabi Airports today awarded the two main duty free concessions at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s much-anticipated Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) to Aer Rianta International and Lagardère Capital. Both contracts are for ten years.

Abu Dhabi Airports described the two companies as “two of the world’s most innovative duty free operators”.

Aer Rianta International (ARI) will design and operate duty free space dedicated to perfumes, cosmetics, skincare, sunglasses and jewellery.

Lagardère will run the core duty free categories, liquor & tobacco, confectionery and fine foods in partnership with Abu Dhabi Capital Group.

The two companies are understood to have headed a high-class field that included DFS Group (the incumbent duty free retailer at Abu Dhabi International Airport’s other terminals, which are not included in this bid), Dufry and Gebr Heinemann. It is important to note that other major Midfield Terminal Building contracts, including luxury, High Street retail, food & beverage and others are yet to be awarded.

The tender process started in February last year. Retailers were asked to submit concepts which would capture the essence of Arabian hospitality, combined with retail execution that would offer “sensational shopping experiences” to the 30 million passengers who are expected to use the MTB when it opens.
