Airports of Thailand to launch tender for airport duty free pick-up counters

THAILAND. The Airports of Thailand (AoT) Board of Directors has approved a proposal to tender the operation of duty free pick-up counters at Bangkok’s two international airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.

Importantly, the winning bidder will have the opportunity to sell duty free goods in cities across Thailand with the option of airport collection at either of the capital city’s gateways. AoT will also offer its own pick-up counters under a proposed two-tier system.

The airport board announced the approved resolution on Monday in a statement sighted by The Moodie Davitt Report. AoT will appoint a working group to prepare the tender documents over coming weeks with a likely bid in December. The tender is open to general entrepreneurs, as well as those that already operate a duty free business, the airport company added.

“These actions will be beneficial in creating fairer free competition as well as improving convenience for tourists by enabling them to buy duty free goods and collect them at the airport,” said AoT. “This will also promote tourism revenue and increase AoT’s non-aeronautical revenues.”

As reported, incumbent duty free retailer King Power International recently secured new long-term contracts for the operation of duty free shops and other commercial activities at Suvarnabhumi and duty free shops at three of Thailand’s other major airports.

AoT said that it is also drafting the criteria for a separate tender to operate the duty free shops at Don Mueang International. These are expected to be released soon.
