“A first sign of revival and hope”: Gebr Heinemann begins delayed redevelopment at Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport

ITALY. Gebr Heinemann and Aeroporti di Puglia have started work on restyling 400sq m of commercial space at Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport.

Heinemann’s objective is to create two 200sq m spaces – one dedicated to core duty free categories and another for regional products, including Italian food and wine – ahead of the stores opening on 20 June.

The airport, which serves over 5 million passengers a year, begins a commercial upgrade that will feature two 200sq m Heinemann stores, with a walkthrough to follow later

The retailer had won the tender to operate the retail space on 7 February but the development was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Italian trade association, Associazione Travel Retail Italia, hailed the work starting on 21 May as “a first sign of revival and hope for the airport sector”.

The seven-year contract is part of a larger project which will see a 700sq m unified walkthrough area developed at the airport in the coming years.
