Japanese spending in Hawaii eases; Korean arrivals rise sharply

USA (HAWAII). Japanese visitor arrivals to Hawaii – the lifeblood of DFS’s business on the islands – rose by +1.6% in the first half, but their spending fell -4.3% year-on-year to US$936.5 million.

Hawaii Tourism Authority numbers showed that Japanese arrivals rose +0.9% in June to 117,057 but again their total spending fell, down -2.2% to US$166.3 million.

Chinese visitor arrivals were virtually unchanged at 91,781 for the first half, though their numbers increased sharply in June 2016 (up +9.1% to 18,658). Korean visitor arrivals increased both year-to-date (+17.7% to 104,383) and in June (+29.4% to 17,779), boosted by additional air services from last December. Spending figures were not released for Chinese or Korean visitors.

For the first half of 2016, total visitor arrivals to the Hawaiian Islands increased +3.3% to 4,415,801 visitors and visitor expenditures rose +1.6% to US$7.7 billion. hawaii dfs
