UK. Edinburgh Airport has been recognised for its excellence in waste management after picking up an industry award.
The airport, in partnership with Specialist Waste Recycling (SWR), was victorious in the ‘Best Food Waste Collection System’ category at the ADBA (Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association) Industry Awards 2016.
Edinburgh Airport Chief Executive Gordon Dewar said: “We are absolutely committed to leading the way when it comes to waste management – and this award is a great reflection of the whole team’s commitment to delivering on and exceeding in our environmental responsibilities.”
In its entry, Edinburgh Airport said it generates around 2,000 tonnes of waste annually from aircraft, maintenance, construction, retail and catering. Food waste from the airport’s F&B operations accounts for 15% of all waste produced on site.
SWR, which began working with the airport in 2011, introduced food waste collections and recycling officers who take responsibility for managing and processing all waste across the estate, including food waste containers. In 2015, 295 tonnes of food waste was collected and taken to anaerobic digestion plants.
