Zürich Airport commercial sales rise in Q1 but average spend drops

SWITZERLAND. Zürich Airport retail and food & beverage sales climbed by +2.6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, hitting CHF122.3 million (US$122 million). This included a healthy +7.6% leap in airside sales, with landside down by -3.1%.

However, spend per departing passenger was CHF40.50 (US$40.36), a decline of -4.3% against the previous year.

Commercial turnover in March was CHF43.3 million (US$43.1 million), down by -0.3% on the same month in 2016. The decrease breaks down into a +5.8% increase airside and a sharp -7.6% decline in landside outlets. Spend per departing passenger was CHF39.50 (US$39.37), down by -6.3% on March 2016.

The airport handled just over 6 million passengers in the first three months, up by +7.3% on Q1 2016. In March the traffic figure reached 2.2 million, a rise of +6.4%.
