Zürich Airport commercial sales climb in first half but average spend declines

SWITZERLAND. Zürich Airport retail and food & beverage turnover climbed by +5.9% year-on-year in the first six months of 2017, hitting CHF271.7 million (US$282 million). Airside sales rose by +10% and landside by +0.8%, compared to the January-June period last year.

The growth figures did not match the sharp +8.6% leap in passenger numbers to 13.7 million. Intra-European traffic grew by +8.6% and intercontinental traffic rose by +10.6%.

Commercial turnover per departing passenger fell by -2.5% to CHF39.60 (US$41.13). The continuing strength of the Swiss Franc against other major currencies is a contributing factor in dampening spend from overseas visitors.

In June, sales climbed by +8.3% to CHF51.1 million (US$53 million), though commercial turnover per departing passenger fell in the month by -2% to CHF38.90 (US$40.41).
