To celebrate its ambitious plan to build food into the number one most-purchased category in travel retail, Nestlé is offering a fabulous food hamper in a daily competition open to all travel retailers and landlords throughout December.

The competition coincides with a compelling visual makeover of The Moodie Davitt Report.com home page this month. In support of the Nestlé ambition, The Moodie Davitt Report has renamed our category page Food & Confectionery (as opposed to Confectionery & Fine Foods).

To enter our Day 5 competition, please email Martin Moodie at Martin@MoodieDavittReport.com headed ‘Nestlé Food Category – VERSE Competition Day 5’, simply naming a food or foods starting with E in the body of your e-mail and tempting the judges as best you can with your culinary description. A prize draw will be held each working day until 24 December.

Entries for Day 5 close 5pm Hong Kong time Wednesday 8 December.

Why the E? Simple. At the Virtual Travel Retail Expo in October, Nestlé International Travel Retail (NITR) General Manager Stewart Dryburgh outlined Nestlé’s VERSE growth model, an acronym representing five pillars: Value, Engagement, Regeneration, Sense of Place and Execution. Each one has a vital role to play in ensuring that Nestlé’s ‘food in 50% of baskets’ target in travel retail is met by 2030, if not before.

Day 4 Winner

We received lots of creative submissions for our Day 4 competition, in which entrants simply had to name a food starting with S to enter the prize draw for a bumper Nestlé hamper.

Once again our contest generated a seriously wide range of entries from the travel retail sector, confirming that they are as well-versed in culinary matters as they are in retail disciplines. Here are some of the best entries.

Philippe Moryl, Global Category Management Head – Confectionery, Food, Souvenirs & Toys  at Dufry was quick to spot the S connection with Nestlé’s famous Smarties brand, while Michael Norfolk ((ex-Humberside Airport Duty Free) opted for a Seafood Salad of Salmon, Sardines, Scallops and Shrimp, with a Spinach, Sun-dried tomatoes, and Shallot Salad.

The budding culinary talent that is Dubai Duty Free Buyer Ymhenia Carpio turned in another tempting gem:

How to make a scrumptious spaghetti
Sauté shallots, spinach, scallops and shrimps
Add a lot of sun-dried tomatoes, Néstle cream and Swiss cheese
Then garnish a bit of saffron like bouillabaisse before serving

Aparna Vinod of the E-commerce & Social Media Department at Dubai Duty Free tempted us yet again, noting that the soothing sound of sizzling s’mores while sipping on a warm salted caramel hot chocolate by a small campfire beneath a starlit sky, snuggled under a blanket, can even make solitude seem satisfying.

And Soni Chirayath, Assistant Buyer at Dubai Duty Free, came up with this delightfully delectable creation: Strolling along the shores of Spain, sipping on a juice of sugarcane, longing for a Spanish meal once again. A bowl of Salmorejo soup plain, followed by smoked salmon shall not be in vain. Sopapilla cheesecake at the end and I will have no complaints!

And how about this from the Dubai Duty Free team alliteration specialist Ardhee Rose Adato-Draaijer, Assistant Manager – Customer Service? Sun-soaked, sandy shore while salivating in seafood festival of grilled salmon, seabream, squid, shrimps, and scallops with a glass of Sangria!

From Arjun Vellangat, Assistant Buyer in the Purchasing and Research Department comes a summer’s evening at the seashore scoffing up a seafood sizzler of salmon, shrimp, squid and scallops served with a side of stir-fried vegetables and a glass of sangria. Oh mamma mia!

Anna Kristine Matias Reyes, Assistant Supervisor at Dubai Duty Free asked us: How about a sushi topped with salmon and sashimi? Drinks? Doesn’t matter if it’s soda or Sake. As long as you have sherbet as your dessert, it will be perfect.

First name out of the hat though, and justifiably so given the quality of her entry, was Phrederika Miltiadou, Global Product & Promotions Manager – Confectionery at World Duty Free (Dufry) in the UK, who also adopted a Smarties theme.

Remember, remember
The fun of December
Christmas Parties, and
Tubes full of Smarties
Family dinners, and
Monopoly winners
Go get out your sleigh
And fly, fly away!

We echo those sentiments Phrederika and trust that governments all around the world will help us get out our airborne sleighs in the New Year. Meanwhile, a fabulous food hamper is on its way to you on the Sleighbell Express, courtesy of Nestlé.

Chapter and VERSE

‘Building food into the #1 most purchased category in travel retail’ – a simple expression of a bold ambition that Nestlé is bringing to the industry – was the subject of a recent Moodie Davitt Spotlight Series eZine edition.

Food & confectionery is already the number-one driver of cross-category purchase and the second-most purchased category, research says. Nestlé’s goal is to leverage the currently untapped potential of food, ensuring it is in 50% of baskets by the end of the decade. Crucially, that means not just focusing on the traditional and highly attractive confectionery category, but also exploiting the opportunities across the food category, encompassing local foods alongside global food brands not yet widely present in travel retail.
