Whyte & Mackay unveils travel retail exclusive The Dalmore collection

Whyte & Mackay has unveiled three permanent global travel retail exclusives for single malt brand The Dalmore.

The three new expressions – The Trio, The Quartet and The Quintet – feature a three-cask, four-cask and five-cask finish respectively and will be available in travel retail from July 2020.

“We are confident that this new travel retail collection from The Dalmore will spark consumer interest and drive penetration,” Richard Trimby says

Whyte & Mackay Director of Global Travel Retail Richard Trimby told The Moodie Davitt Report the release will be accompanied by activations in Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol and Frankfurt airports as well as other locations.

He said: “Travel Retail remains a major focus for The Dalmore and we are continuing to invest in innovation to reinforce its positioning at the apex of malt whisky, to drive value growth for our customers and offer travel retail exclusives that attract passengers in to store.

“Consumers are often looking to discover new products in travel retail, so innovation is key to driving growth. We are confident that this new travel retail collection from The Dalmore will spark consumer interest and drive penetration, conversion and spend.”

Tasting notes

The Trio (retailing at US$95) has three cask finishes of first-fill ex-bourbon, 10yo Tawny Port and 30yo Matusalem sherry; it has a flavour profile of ripe plums and berries with hints of sweet spices

The Quartet (retailing at US$110) is finished in first-fill ex-bourbon, 30yo Matusalem sherry, 30yo Apostoles sherry and Bordeaux cabernet sauvignon; it has flavours of red grape and raisins with hints of chocolate and liquorice.

The Quintet (retailing at $130) is finished in five casks: Moscatel, Malmsey Madeira, 30yo Matusalem sherry, 10yo Port and Bordeaux cabernet sauvignon. It has flavours of exotic fruit drenched in maple syrup and coffee notes.

The packaging of the collection is designed to highlight The Dalmore as a premium brand with a large metallic royal stag emblem on each bottle, which will help the brand stand out in travel retail.

The Moodie Davitt Report and liquor buyers celebrate 180 years of The Dalmore at the Majestic Hotel, Cannes

News of the new collection was revealed by Whyte & Mackay yesterday (1 October) when the liquor company exclusively invited The Moodie Davitt Report to celebrate 180 years of The Dalmore.

At the event, which was also attended by top liquor buyers from Dufry, Lagardére Travel Retail and Ever Rich Duty Free, four whiskies were tasted. The first was an assemblage of a 12yo, 15yo and 18yo; the second was a combination of a 25yo and 35yo; the third a combination of a 30yo and 45yo; and the final one – an exclusive one-off for the occasion – was an assemblage of the previous three, meaning an accumulated 180 years of whisky had gone into it.
