Whyte & Mackay releases five bottles of £55,000 The Dalmore 51-year-old in travel retail

Whyte & Mackay has unveiled an ultra-rare The Dalmore 51-year-old single malt, which is available in selected travel retail and domestic stores for £55,000 (US$71,665) from this month.

The 40% ABV whisky began its half-decade maturation journey in ex-bourbon casks and was then distributed between casks of Port Colheita 1938, matusalem sherry and first-fill bourbon. The spirit was then reunited in selected bourbon barrels.

Only 51 bottles of the limited-edition release have been created. Of these, five have been released in travel retail – four in Asian locations and one at Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport.

Whyte & Mackay Travel Retail Director Richard Trimby said: “The Dalmore Aged 51 Years is an incredibly rare whisky and would be the ultimate addition to a collection. It is a reflection of The Dalmore’s standing as both a true heritage whisky brand and an innovator and pioneer within the category.

“These unique and rare decanters will be showcased on incredibly beautiful displays in some of the finest travel retail outlets in the world. A product like this creates a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for shoppers by offering something truly special, which will help drive penetration and conversion in-store.”

Each of the bottles is presented in a crystal decanter featuring The Dalmore stag in sterling silver and a high-gloss presentation case crafted from black sycamore wood.

Richard Paterson has been the creative force for The Dalmore since 1970 and has overseen the maturation of the 51-year-old

“The Dalmore 51-year-old is a noble single malt of rare profundity and it has been my pleasure to closely follow its maturation over five decades,” The Dalmore Master Distiller Richard Paterson added.

“I am always looking towards the future and I carefully consider how each distillation will evolve, moving our spirits to new wood to transform their conclusion. The Dalmore 51-year-old is a fine example of this.”

Only 51 bottles of the single malt are available

The Dalmore is currently marking its 180th anniversary with a series of special releases and events.

Tasting notes

The mahogany gold-coloured, 51-year-old single malt has an aroma of liquorice stick, Napoleon cake laced with black morello cherries and marmalade. The palate features El Dorado plums, raisins, ginger cake and vanilla before a finish of treacle, pineapple and sultanas.
