WHSmith extends store footprint in Southeast Asia with new openings

ASIA. News, books and convenience operator WHSmith has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia with store openings in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The company won a contract at Singapore Changi airport last week covering ten units across terminals 1 to 4.

In Indonesia, WHSmith has opened the first of three stores at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Terminal 3, to be operated by local franchisee KPU, a subsidiary of Indonesian company PT Sona Topas. The additional stores will be opened when terminal construction is completed in the coming months.

KPU also operates a WHSmith store in Jakarta’s Terminal 2, as well as eight in Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport.

In the Philippines, WHSmith recently opened stores at Manila Ninoy Aquino International and Cebu Mactan International airports, its first outlets in the country. The stores will be operated by Regent Travel Retail under a franchise agreement.

In Malaysia, WHSmith has opened a WHSmith Express format store in Kuala Lumpur International’s Terminal 1 Satellite building. There are now nine WHSmith stores across four Malaysian airports, under a joint venture with Bison Consolidated.

All stores feature the latest WHSmith design, fixtures and fittings and will sell a range of news, books, travel and convenience items.
