Western Sydney Airport appoints Glyn Williams to head retail

Western Sydney International, the New South Wales capital’s only 24/7 airport, is on track to open to international, domestic and air cargo services in late 2026

AUSTRALIA. Western Sydney Airport has appointed Glyn Williams to lead its retail development, shaping the shopping and dining experience for future customers at Sydney’s new gateway.

As General Manager Retail, Williams will oversee the planning and design of the retail offering for the much-anticipated Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Williams, much respected in travel retail circles, was previously the General Manager, Retail at Sydney Airport from May 2014 to January 2019, where he drove the retail transformation of Terminals 1 and 2.  Later he joined Harding Retail as Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, while earlier in his career he was Group General Manager Retail at Dexus Property Group and Regional General Manager at Westfield.

The shopping, dining and entertainment experience will be an important part of the world-class customer journey that Australia’s newest and most exciting airport will deliver, Williams pledged.

“This terminal will be a destination in its own right – with specialty retail, restaurants and cafes, as well as an outdoor plaza that can host events like local food festivals, markets and community celebrations.

“We’ve got a unique greenfield opportunity to deliver an exceptional and compelling customer experience unconstrained by legacy airport retail operating principles.”

“This terminal will be a destination in its own right,” says Glyn Williams

About Western Sydney International Airport

Western Sydney International, the city’s only 24/7 airport, is on track to open to international, domestic and air cargo services in late 2026.

The airport has been designed to grow in stages and, over decades, eventually become Sydney’s major airport and one of the biggest gateways to Australia.

Notably, the airport company is working closely with First Nations communities to ensure that when visitors arrive in Australia or locals return home, they know they’ve landed on Aboriginal land. The terminal’s design will include prominent elements that celebrate the richness and diversity of Australia’s First Nations culture, the oldest enduring culture on the planet.

Sustainability will be at the airport’s core, exemplified by the way the terminal’s design minimises energy use.

Connectivity to the city will be excellent with a dedicated Metro train line connecting the airport to Sydney’s rail network. Billions of dollars is being spent on new and upgraded arterial roads, including a new toll-free M12 motorway direct to the airport.

As well as the MOUs signed with Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar, the airport company is also talking to over 60 Australian and overseas airlines about future route connections.

Note: We will bring you more on Western Sydney Airport in a major feature in our October Magazine, which will appear at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes (2-6 October) and The Trinity Forum in Singapore (1-2 November).
