Welcoming a legend: Fraport to open Primanti Brothers at Pittsburgh Airport

USA. Fraport USA will open a Primanti Brothers restaurant and bar at Pittsburgh International Airport next year.

Primanti Bros. was founded in 1933 by three brothers who served hearty sandwiches to workers during the Great Depression. It is credited with putting Pittsburgh on the map of “culinary curiosities”, thanks to its sandwiches, which feature grilled meat, melted cheese, an oil and vinegar-based coleslaw, tomato slices and French fries between two thick slices of Italian bread.

“Big sandwiches, big drinks; the same attitude you’ve been getting from me since 1973.” – Primanti Bros. Manager Toni Haggerty

Primanti Brothers’ ‘Almost Famous’ sandwich: Coming soon to Pittsburgh International Airport.

The new Center Core outlet will be the sandwich shop chain’s first airport location. Its design and menu will be based on the original Primanti Bros. in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District.

Primanti Bros. Manager Toni Haggerty said: “We’ve been doing this for nearly 86 years. And we’re going to keep doing the same thing now that we’re in the airport. Big sandwiches, big drinks; the same attitude you’ve been getting from me since 1973.”

Allegheny County Airport Authority Chief Commercial Officer Eric Sprys added: “Passengers have been asking for an airport Primanti’s for years. We are so happy to partner with this iconic restaurant that reflects perhaps Pittsburgh’s best-known sandwich.

“This is another piece of our Sense of Place initiative; to bring more of our region’s great food and culture into the terminal.”

The airport restaurant will also feature a bar with a selection of draft and bottled beers and cocktails.

Fraport USA President and CEO Ben Zandi commented: “Primanti Bros. is a Pittsburgh legend. The brothers kick-started the food scene here by serving great food to hungry diners at a good price. We’re thrilled to bring this Pittsburgh giant to the airport.”
