AUSTRALIA. There were scenes of joy at Australian airports today as fully vaccinated international visitors were allowed to enter the country without the need for quarantine for the first time in almost two years. Australia has had some of the strictest entry rules in the world through the pandemic. The reopening, announced earlier this month, represents a big boost to the aviation, tourism and travel retail sectors.
Sydney Airport shared images on LinkedIn of families and friends reuniting, saying, “It’s been two years too long. Today we celebrate the opening of our international borders to all vaccinated international visitors. Welcome back, world!”
Melbourne and Brisbane airports also shared memorable images of arriving travellers.
Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Lorie Argus said the return of international tourists marks a “pivotal moment” for aviation and will underpin the recovery of Victoria’s tourism industry.
She said: “International airlines are already responding positively to the reopening of our borders, with a number looking to resume or increase flights to Melbourne. Today there are many flights from around the world touching down in Melbourne. We are delighted to welcome tourists from Singapore, Phuket, Auckland, Delhi, Doha, London, Dubai and Tokyo.”
Brisbane Airport said in a social media post: “We are thrilled to see passengers reuniting with loved ones and starting new adventures. We are better connected.”
