“By winning this important tender we foster our strong footprint in the Caribbean” – Julián Díaz

GUADELOUPE.  Dufry CEO Julián Díaz has underlined the strategic importance of the retailer’s successful retention and extension of its duty free and speciality retail concession at Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes Airport.

As first revealed by The Moodie Davitt Report on 18 August, Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes Airport Company awarded incumbent Dufry its Terminal 1 and 2 Departures store duty free contract. The ten-year concession (Lot 1), which begins in 2017, includes a ‘Surf Shop, Fashion and Perfumes & Cosmetics’ outlet in T1 Arrivals.

Dufry, offering a Hudson News concept, was also awarded Lot 2, a five-year concession for a tobacconist, bookstore, CD and convenience shop in T1 plus a mobile kiosk in T2. Dufry will now operate its duty free shops at the airport until 2026 and its convenience shops until 2021.

Díaz commented: “By winning this important tender we foster our strong footprint in the Caribbean and underline our ability to develop competitive and attractive travel retail solutions for airports and their passengers across the world. Our dedicated shop design will make Guadeloupean citizens feel at home and help visitors experience the rich culture and tradition of this beautiful island.

“We thank the Guadeloupe Airport Authorities for their ongoing trust and for appointing Dufry to extend this successful cooperation.”

Société Aéroportuaire Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes (SA GPC) Chairman Alain Bievre said: “The airport of Pointe à Pitre/Le Raizet has been successfully operating the first walk-through duty free shop ever since the year 2000 and the first duty free shop for the region. With its decision to extend and expand the cooperation through the development of new retail spaces, the Board of SA GPC not only renews its trust in the Dufry Group, but also supports the company in diversifying and increasing its operations at the Point à Pitre/Le Raizet Airport and the region as a whole.”

Concessions were awarded based on the following criteria and weighting:

• Architecture and design: 200 points
• Marketing and quality: 100 points
• Financial offer: 600 points
• Overall credibility of the offer: 100 points

Respected French concessions specialist Public Tenders & Marketing (PTM) was in charge of the management of the tender process and analysis of the bids.

Walk-through wonderland: Dufry plans an ambitious reworking of its retail concept to maximise penetration

Dufry said that it will develop five new stores and almost double its retail space to over 1,110sq m. It pledged that the new shops will incorporate the latest design developments and deliver “a world-class airport shopping experience” to over 1 million departing passengers that use Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes Airport each year.

Dufry has operated a 515sq m walk-through duty free shop at the airport since 2000, plus a 50sq m duty free store which opened in 2014. The travel retailer will begin its shop development programme in December 2016 with the total re-design of its main duty free shop in the International Terminal. When completed, the 783sq m store will offer an extensive range of beauty, liquor, tobacco and confectionery items alongside clothing, watches and jewellery.

Guadeloupe-1In the Regional Terminal, a 180sq m duty free and duty paid shop will be completed in Summer 2017. It too will offer the core product categories as well as some clothing and luxury accessories. A 35sq m fashion shop selling beach and surf-wear will be located in the Arrivals area of the International Terminal, whilst a Hudson news and convenience shop with a footprint of 108sq m will be located in the boarding area of the International Terminal. An additional 12sq m Hudson kiosk will be situated in the boarding area of the Regional Terminal.

PTM-logoDufry promised to give passengers an “inspiring and positive in-store experience”, saying that a key element of the main duty free shop developments will be to create a ‘Sense of Place’. The retailer commented: “A contemporary design along with materials such as wood and reflective surfaces will evoke elements of the locality and the Caribbean, whilst a ‘Thinking Guadeloupe’ area in the main duty free shop will offer local foods and gift items.”

Lot 3, for the five-year operation of a souvenirs and jewellery shop in T1 was won by local company Espace Madras. The result of Lot 4, covering a sandwich bar in T1 and T2 and Foodstore in T1 Arrivals, has been postponed. Other Lots are still to be awarded.
