Australian company WOSUP (an acronym for ‘War On Single Use Plastic’), which designs and manufactures non-plastic alternatives to single use plastic, has launched the food-grade 304 stainless steel WOSUP Cup. The travel industry, including airports, is among its target markets.
The cups’ main purpose is to eliminate the use of single-use plastic cups for major events, stadiums, festivals, clubs, and pubs as well as home entertaining, outdoors, camping, fishing, picnics, parties and travelling.
They are 100% reusable, BPA-free, non-toxic, dishwasher safe, lightweight and durable. Their stainless steel material has the added benefit of keeping drinks extra-chilled, where required.
WOSUP was born when founders Karl Page and Martin Salter were drinking beers at a major Australian Rules Football game and found themselves sitting in a “sea of plastic cups”. They began re-using their plastic cups and discussed how they could create an alternative solution, leading to the creation of the new business.
The business partners’ research found that each year about 500 billion disposable cups are consumed across the globe and 130 million tons of plastic litters the oceans every year.
Page said: “As a surfer and ocean lover, I see the impact of single use plastic every day. Our ocean and marine life are choking on it. We wanted to tackle the plastic crisis head-on, and with a solution that would have a positive impact. It starts with simple things like choosing a reusable cup instead of a disposable one.”
Co-founder Salter, who is also Managing Director of 2h Media Solutions and a former Head of Advertising and New Media at Sydney Airport, said: “WOSUP products and services provide both businesses and customers with an alternative to plastic. Most importantly, customers know they’re doing something positive for the planet, which provides a bonus feel-good factor. The WOSUP cup is a simple solution to a substantial environmental issue.”
The cups are available in three sizes for volumes of 285ml, 425ml and 568ml. This includes a 425ml collectible ‘fan cup’, complete with LED and RFID technology.
