Vienna Airport reports leap in revenue and passenger traffic in 2022

AUSTRIA. Vienna International Airport, operated by Flughafen Wien AG, has reported impressive results for the year 2022 with a significant increase in both passenger traffic, revenue and profits. The airport served 23.7 million passengers last year, achieving 75% of the passenger volume recorded in 2019.

The Flughafen Wien Group, which comprises Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport, saw a substantial rise in total passenger volume in 2022, with 30.1 million travellers recorded, indicating a +129.3% increase. However, this figure represents a decline of almost 24% compared to the pre-pandemic level of 2019.

“Vienna Airport is showing its strength once again following the coronavirus-related downswing. The year 2022 led to a substantial increase in the net profit to over €128 million,” said Günther Ofner, Member of the Management Board. Vienna Airport’s revenue for the year was €692.7 million, increasing by +70.2% year-on-year, while EBITDA almost doubled to €295.9 million.

The Retail & Properties Segment reported revenue of €138.8 million in 2022, an increase of +68.6% year-on-year.

Ofner also stated that “these good business results will serve as the basis for a clear growth path based on higher investments which should equal about €135 million, alongside the dynamic growth of the AirportCity.”

The increase in passenger traffic was driven by a combination of factors, including the opening of new routes and the airport’s strong position as a hub for both business and leisure travellers.

Member of the Management Board Julian Jäger said: “The strong passenger volume of 2022 will continue into 2023. We expect the total number of passengers to equal about 26-27 million at Vienna Airport and 32-34 million in the entire Flughafen Wien Group. Many new flight offerings await travellers in the summer months. Up to 190 destinations will be directly reached from Vienna, including many new short-haul and medium-haul destinations to European cities and the Mediterranean region. Long-haul flight service is also making a strong comeback again, as reflected in the new flight connection to Delhi and increased frequencies to Africa, Asia and Canada.”

Commercial turnover at Vienna Airport climbed sharply in 2022 as passenger traffic accelerated

Travellers will encounter an expanded culinary experience starting this Easter, with the Panorama Restaurant Zugvogel undergoing modernisation. DO&CO is also introducing a new food court at the C Gates, complete with an Onyx and delicatessen bar, while Figlmüller is expanding to offer a panorama bar.

Additionally, the arrivals hall will welcome three new restaurants and retail brands – Billa Corso, Burger King and Costa Coffee. With the Terminal 3 Southern Enlargement project, which will provide an additional 70,000sq m of terminal space, passengers can expect an even greater range of shopping and dining options by 2027.

Vienna Airport management remains optimistic for this year, with revenue of around €830 million along with EBITDA of at least €325 million and a group net profit exceeding €150 million expected. ✈
