Vienna Airport passenger numbers fall by double digits in March; first-quarter figures now back at 2007 levels – 16/04/09

AUSTRIA. The number of passengers handled by Vienna International Airport during March 2009 fell by -15.6% year-on-year to 1,368,380.

Flight movements fell by -9.4% compared to March 2008. The number of locally departing passengers decreased by -16% to 955,956, while transfer passengers were down by -14.9% to 408,996.

The number of passengers (scheduled and charter traffic) travelling to Eastern Europe fell by -19.1% and traffic to the Middle East declined by -6.4% year-on-year.

The airport company said: “Following strong growth in the previous year, the passenger volume for the first quarter of 2009 returned to the level recorded in the first quarter of 2007.”

First-quarter passenger numbers were 3,660,091, down by -14.8% on Q1 2008. Traffic fell by -15.6% in February and by -12.2% in January.
