US$154 million Tampa International terminal expansion sees 69 concession spaces

USA. Main contractor Skanska and global design firm HOK have completed the US$154 million expansion and renovation of Tampa International Airport’s Main Terminal. The project has added 98,000sq ft of new enclosed and useable space and 69 concessions slots in five facilities.

The partners said that the improvements will enhance the passenger experience, expand dining and shopping options and improve wayfinding for travellers at Florida’s third-busiest airport by passenger traffic.

HOK’s design relocated the shuttle stations to gain terminal space and further natural light penetration into the terminal.

Construction company Skanska led the airport’s Main Terminal Transfer Level expansion and associated terminal redevelopment plus functional improvements to airsides A, C, E and F.

This expansion included raising the former east and west outdoor decks, creating four Transfer Level terraces and the removal of the former airside D shuttle lobby to create space for a food court.

The expanded food court in the Main Terminal provides abundant natural light and views out to the ramp and airfield.

With its completion, the project added 55,000sq ft to the terminal’s third floor Transfer Level. Skanska said that by pushing back shuttle enclosures and moving restaurants to the perimeter, it opened a central area for shops and comfortable lounge seating. Additionally, privacy glass was installed in restaurant and event spaces to allow for more natural light.

Skanska added that the redevelopment work has improved sight lines, intermixes airside concessions, and makes new outdoor terraces accessible to meeters and greeters, passengers and employees, with two terrace spaces dedicated to restaurants.

HOK oversaw the campus-wide public art programme with commissioned works and relocation of existing works. Daniel Canogar’s ‘Tendril’ above one of the retail areas features coiled LED screens.

Functional airside improvements for all gate lounges included power poles, seating options, recycle units plus the interwoven concessions.

Skanska Executive Vice President, General Manager for Florida Michael C. Brown said: “With the delivery of this renovation and expansion, passengers at Tampa International Airport will benefit from more ample seating areas, selection of dining and shopping options and a look and feel that reflects Tampa’s best attributes.”

A variety of new seating options on the Transfer Level offer travellers multiple opportunities to “plug in”.

HOK Design Principal for the project Leesa Coller said: “When guests visit the renovated terminal, they will experience design details reflecting the beautiful Tampa Bay region. The comprehensive design integrates the soft colours of the beaches and bay as well as the lush greens and brightly-coloured local flora.”

Construction of the Main Terminal and concessions programme commenced in 2014 and is one of the largest elements of the first phase of the airport’s master plan expansion.

This large terrace to the west of the Main Terminal serves as the event space for the airport.

The work is part of a three-phase expansion and modernisation that will allow Tampa International to accommodate up to 34 million annual passengers. The airport served a record 21 million passengers in 2018.
