Travellers get a taste of Mumbai with airport street food festival

INDIA. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is tantalising passengers’ sense of taste and smell with a special F&B event which got underway this week.

The Mumbai Street Food Festival, which runs until 16 October, offers travellers an authentic taste of the city with a variety of food stalls in Terminal 2’s Domestic Security Holding Area.

Sense of place and sense of taste: Travellers can enjoy a wide variety of Mumbai street foods

Described by airport operator Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) as “a haven for all foodies”, the experiential food festival is being staged for the first time. It runs from 10am to 9pm each day.

The variety of food on offer includes Mumbai’s famous Misal (a popular spicy snack); the Mumbai Sandwich (toasted white bread with herb chutney, masala spices and layers of cheese, cucumber, onion and tomato); Ice Golas (ice with flavoured syrup) and Chaat, a well-known Indian street food.

An Ice Gola – a huge favourite among Indian children – is prepared on one of the F&B stalls

MIAL said the event involves foods which are sold in the best-known eating areas across the city, from Dadar Shivaji Park’s popular Mumbai Chat Corner to Thane’s Mamledar Misal. The street food, it added, comes from brands that have a deep-rooted legacy in Mumbai.

The airport operator stressed that its recreation of the Mumbai street food scene includes a focus on putting passenger safety first and thus the festival is being conducted with adherence to all COVID-19-related protocols.

All staff involved in the food festival activation wear masks and practice appropriate social distancing at all times.

A note from MIAL said: “Travellers can enjoy a truly Mumbai vibe, at its very own airport. Passenger delight is more than just a requirement, it’s a necessity. So come join in and grab a bite from the best of Mumbai’s Street food available at your convenience.”
