SPAIN. Wine producer Bodegas Miguel Torres has replanted woodland on the Canary Islands and in Catalonia as part of its commitment to the environment.
Last January, the company signed an agreement with the government of Tenerife, on the Canary Islands, to reforest the estate of La Orilla.
This agreement includes a financial contribution of €120,000 to reforest 24 hectares of the estate.
The land to be replanted currently contain non-indigenous species, which will be replaced by 72,000 examples from the archipelago (called the “monteverde”) in order to revive the original ecosystem. These species also retain moisture, a natural tool against the spread of forest fires.
The project will start in 2008 and will be carried out over the next ten years. Bodegas Torres will allocate €5 million over the next 10 years to plant trees, in a bid to alleviate the effects of climate change.
In another sustainability initiative, Bodegas Torres has replanted trees in the country park of Olèrdola, in the Penedès region of Catalonia with the help of 330 Club Torres members and the Forest Fire Extinction Group.
Torres said: “Torres’ proposals for 2008 are based on sustainable growth and clear ecological awareness, the three days spent in Olèrdola being of great value since a total of 609 trees have been planted, these comprising pines, holm and other Mediterranean oaks.
“This activity has been a small contribution towards the replanting of the park and could not have happened without the collaboration of the 330 Club Torres members who took part and, most of all, the forestry experts who have selflessly collaborated with the cause.”
