Tomatin presents 50yo Scotch whisky at Schiphol Exquisite store

Highland distillery Tomatin is partnering with Schiphol Airport Retail (SAR) to present its oldest Scotch whisky at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. SAR is the joint venture between Gebr. Heinemann and Royal Schiphol Group.

The 50yo whisky, which has a 45.3% ABV and is limited to just 70 bottles, is available exclusively at the Exquisite Shop which specialises in fine wines, spirits and cigars. According to Tomatin, its 50yo will also feature at Istanbul Airport, with Unifree and Heinemann, at a later date.

The expression was distilled in November 1967, finished in first-fill Oloroso sherry cask and bottled in September 2018. It was released in December to retail at £10,000 (US$12,476).

The Tomatin 50yo is presented in a numbered, hand-blown Glencairn crystal decanter in a wooden box, finished with Italian leather. The decanter is sealed with a wooden transit cork; an engraved, brass gold-plated and glass stopper is also provided. Each box comes with a numbered book which is signed by Tomatin Distillery Manager Graham Eunson. A premium leather carry bag completes the presentation.

On the nose, the 50yo offers notes of oak, apples pears and plums, with spices and manuka honey. Tastes of tropical fruits and dried apricots, vanilla toffee, crème caramel and raisins are balanced to offer a “velvety” finish.

As reported, Tomatin launched a series of whiskies which are available in travel retail across Europe. The age statement collection includes the Tomatin flagship 12yo and three travel retail exclusive editions: an 8yo, a 15yo and a 40yo vintage. The travel retail range claimed three double golds and one gold award at the recent San Francisco World Spirit competition.

Tomatin Distillery Graham Nicolson said: “It is with great pleasure that we announce the arrival of our oldest expression – the Tomatin 50yo – to Schiphol Airport. This special expression has been quietly resting for half a century and it will be wonderful to see it presented in all its glory within Schiphol Airport Retail’s travel retail space.”

Tomatin Distillery said it will continue its collaboration with Rumesco Agencies Owner Rudy to handle the roll-out of product and brand strategy across the world.
