Three alliances vie for Thai regional airport duty free contracts

THAILAND. Airports of Thailand (AOT) has revealed a short-list of three bidders for the regional airports duty free business at Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket airports.

King Power Duty Free Co., Ltd., Bangkok Airways Holding in partnership with Lotte Duty Free, and Royal Orchid Hotel Thailand in partnership with Empire Asia Group Ltd. and Dufry, have submitted their qualifications to run the business. The winner will operate duty free across all three airports.

AOT Senior Executive Vice President (Business Development and Marketing) Wichai Bunyu said today that four companies had purchased the bid documents, with three submitting bids by today’s deadline.

AOT has scheduled the technical presentation for the three participants for tomorrow (5 June). It will open the financial envelopes and announce the highest technical scores on 10 June.

As reported last week, King Power topped the bid for the duty free concession at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. King Power was also announced as the top bidder for a separate concession for other retail at the airport, including food & beverage, services and foreign exchange.

As previously reported, AOT decided in March to tender the duty free concession at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport separately from the three other airports.

King Power, which topped the bids for Bangkok Suvarnabhumi last week, is one of three bidders vying for the triple airport duty free contract covering Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai.
