INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to The Moodie Davitt e-Zine – Travel Retail’s Lookbook. From Charles Chen’s address on the changing nature of the Chinese traveller to Colm McLoughlin’s reminder of the importance of front line staff, The Trinity Forum 2018 was full of compelling presentations and discussion panels.
We reflect on a memorable few days in Shanghai in our comprehensive review of the event. Speakers discussed some of the great themes and dynamics of travel retail today, including digitalisation, traveller engagement, the retail experience and industry relationships.
Elsewhere, we are on location in Oman for the historic official inauguration of Muscat International Airport. We explore the new facility and review the eye-catching Muscat Duty Free offer through a series of talking points, aided by images and video.
Two years ago, in the stand-out presentation of The Trinity Forum 2016 in Mumbai, then-Fraport Senior Vice President Kai Schmidhuber (today Chief Digital Officer at French beauty products giant L’Oréal and owner of digital consulting firm ai-retail.com) wowed the audience with a compelling insight into how one of Europe’s leading airport companies was embracing the digital world.
Much has changed since then, and the digital guru now wonders whether some airport retailers are falling foul of a ‘digitalisation mania’ in which they are implementing costly and unfocused solutions. In our ‘Travel retail’s positive disruptors and innovators’ column, he calls for a more precise, coherent and financially disciplined approach.
Finally, we would like to again draw your attention to DFS’ urgent disaster appeal in Saipan to help its staff and other residents affected by Super Typhoon Yutu. Many have lost their homes while others are faced with the economic challenges of recovery, and desperately require assistance to help rebuild their lives.
