The changing face of Philippines travel retail – a special publication

PHILIPPINES. The Moodie Davitt Report today publishes a special eZine dedicated to the fast-changing travel retail market in the Philippines.

The publication examines in particular what we consider to be two step-changing developments – the new Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 and Duty Free Philippines’ elegant new LUXE downtown store in Metro Manila, both opened last year. Writer and Publisher Martin Moodie visited both locations, as well as Manila’s main gateway, Ninoy Aquino International Airport, and Fiestamall, an integral component of the warm welcome home that always awaits the country’s legion of overseas workers.

Both represent a new, different and compelling face of travel retail in the Philippines, geared towards a boom (86% in two years) in Chinese tourism to the country.

Moodie examines the retail implications of the changing customer profile and reports on how airports, retailers and food and beverage operators are responding. He talks to Duty Free Philippines Chief Operating Officer Vicente Pelagio ‘Vico’ A. Angala; Mactan-Cebu International Airport commercial management; and SSP Mactan Cebu General Manager Neil Streeter.

He also meets the Esteban family, led by Jose Maria ‘Chim’ N. Esteban III, the great pioneer of travel retail in the Philippines. Son and daughter Jose Alfonso ‘Joey’ Esteban and Celina Marie M. Esteban talk with pride, passion and ambition about how the family companies (Regent Travel Retail Group and Landmark Group) are adapting their brand offering, merchandising and communications strategy to the evolving commercial landscape.

“It’s time to start viewing travel retail in the Philippines through a different prism,” says Joey Esteban.

We agree. And we hope this special publication, told in words, pictures, podcasts and video helps you understand and enjoy the view.
