The Balvenie Distillery launches vintage 1964 single malt Scotch whisky exclusively at Hong Kong International Airport – 10/09/08

SCOTLAND. The Balvenie Distillery has released 151 bottles from a single cask of The Balvenie laid down in 1964, to be sold exclusively in Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

Priced at HK$108,000 (£7,100/US$14,200) a bottle, The Balvenie 1964 Single Malt Scotch Whisky was bottled exclusively for duty free retailer Sky Connection.

The unique cask, Number 10378 from 1964, was matured to perfection at The Balvenie Distillery, and is extremely rare. The cask was personally selected by The Balvenie Malt Master, rested in a single oak cask for over 40 years at The Balvenie Distillery in Speyside, Scotland.

An expert in whisky maturation, The Balvenie Malt Master David Stewart said: “It is only a few special casks of The Balvenie single malt that continue to improve beyond 40 years. Each cask has a unique influence on the spirit it holds and the fine balance of flavours in The Balvenie 1964 can never be repeated.”

The company said the long period of maturation has infused The Balvenie 1964 with “an amazing depth of flavour, characterised by sweet infusions of dried tobacco leaf and rich fruit cake, complex layers of dried fruits, ground coffee, walnut, and elegant oakiness”. Bottled at cask strength of 41.3%abv and presented in a specially crafted cherry wood box, each bottle is individually hand numbered.

The Balvenie Travel Retail Marketing Manager Nick Woodward noted: “In Asia, there are elite consumers looking to discover highly limited and truly authentic products, and The Balvenie 1964 is one of our most precious bottlings. We chose Hong Kong Airport for this exclusive launch as passengers there are well known for their desire for prestigious, handcrafted luxury.”

Sky Connection CEO Baker Salleh said: “On behalf of all malt connoisseurs, I would like to thank The Balvenie Distillery and The Balvenie Malt Master, Mr David Stewart for releasing this extremely rare masterpiece. It is an honour for Sky Connection to be a part of this legacy which started over 40 years ago at Speyside and is now on its way to HKIA to be acquired by our discerning customers.”
