NORDIC REGION. Tallink Grupp has entered a new cooperation agreement with the John Nurminen Foundation to raise vital funds for the protection of the Baltic Sea.
As part of the cooperation, Tallink will make a donation to the Finnish organisation from every Tallink and Silja Line branded water bottle sold on board the company’s vessels during 2023.
“We hope that by the end of the year we will have been able to support the vital activities of John Nurminen Foundation with approximately €20,000 through this year’s campaign” – Tallink Grupp Management Board Member Piret Mürk-Dubout
Tallink has collaborated with the foundation on protection projects in the past, but not on the scale of the new partnership. In addition to raising funds, the partners will also work together on raising awareness of key concerns facing the Baltic Sea and ways in which everyone can get involved in its protection.
Tallink Grupp Management Board Member Piret Mürk-Dubout said: “Our cooperation with the foundation has been a bit more general in the past with donations made to support their efforts in our region. But we felt more practical steps also need to be taken now with increased support both financially and through awareness-raising.
“We are pleased that we can give every one of our customers the opportunity to participate in the protection of our beloved Baltic Sea, but also increase their knowledge on various environmental topics, such as recycling, the health of the Baltic Sea, simple steps we can all take to help the environment, at the same time.
“Bottled water is the number one sales article on board our vessels although reusable water bottles and simply drinking tap water on board are increasingly popular too,” Mürk-Dubout added.
“We hope that by the end of the year we will have been able to support the vital activities of John Nurminen Foundation with approximately €20,000 through this year’s campaign and our customers and staff will know much more about how they can help protect our Baltic Sea and the environment in general.”
John Nurminen Foundation Fundraising Manager Erkki Salo commented: “We act on a daily basis to reduce eutrophication of the Baltic Sea and to preserve the diversity of marine nature.
“At the John Nurminen Foundation, we are grateful to Tallink Grupp for their support, which we will use to improve the well-being of our beloved Baltic Sea, to fight against the loss of biodiversity and to strengthen the awareness about the Baltic Sea and its heritage.”
Tallink Grupp was awarded the ISO 14001 certificate in 2008 and the group’s Silja Line vessels have held the certificate for many years. The certificate is the world’s best-known environmental management system, which helps companies to improve their level of environmental performance and demonstrate good management of their environmental affairs.
According to the group, Tallink is “dedicated to doing long-term work to protect the environment and to take care of the unique Baltic Sea, which is the shared living and working environment for everyone in the Baltic Sea region”.
“As a company, we also encourage our customers and partners to do the same. Responsibility for the environment is something we all share,” the company added.

As reported, Tallink underlined its belief in the future of travel and travel retail earlier this month by hosting a spectacular celebration of its shopping offer onboard the new MyStar cruise ferry. At 2,500sq m over two decks, the €247 million vessel – which serves the vital Tallinn-Helsinki route – houses the largest retail environment of any ship in the Baltic Sea, with many market firsts from brand partners.
The Moodie Davitt Report was among 200 guests invited to travel on the ship for a special inauguration event at the Traveller Superstore. Click here to read the full on-location report from The Moodie Davitt Report President Dermot Davitt.
