Stars of 2020: Pride, passion and commitment at HMSHost International locations

INTERNATIONAL. In our special series to close out 2020, we focus on the heroes and heroines who stood up as a global pandemic raged and ensured that airport, travel retail store and restaurant environments were safe and hygienic, that shelves were stocked and that customers – though few in number – could still enjoy a reassuring shopping, dining or general airport experience, even in constrained conditions.

With the assistance and input of our industry partners, we present the stories of some of those individuals and teams who ensured that a pulse still beat through travel retail this year. As reported in The Moodie Davitt eZine, we salute these front line workers as our People of the Year, with our online coverage building on the pictorial in our year-end edition.

On this page we pay tribute to the men and women of global travel F&B powerhouse HMSHost International, whose teams have been affected by the virus in markets across the world.

Alina Rai and Ann, HMSHost International team members at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The company says: “Such an incredible feeling of joy and happiness to see the guests share a Kodak moment with the team. Sometimes, all we need is just to forget our worries and smile.”

The company says: “Through all that our company has been through, the toughest days, the most euphoric, our people have been our own heroes. They have closed stores only to reopen them, they have turned up for work when their friends and family were in lockdown, they have pooled hours to secure jobs for the many rather than the few, they have organised donations for the vulnerable, and kept a close eye on each other for health and wellbeing. All the time, greeting travellers with a smile and some of our special HMSHost attention.

“For that reason, we are so glad to read of your initiative [to champion these front line heroes] and reached out to our regions to share with us some of their own heroes. This is only a small expression of our heroes, as truly, whether front of house or back of house, we couldn’t be more proud of our associates and the commitment and passion that they have shown for our company all over the world.”

We feature images of many of those workers from Norway to Turkey, and from the UAE to Vietnam on this page.

Multi Marketing Manager HMSHost APAC Norma Wirasti. The company says: “Our incredible Norma has gone far and beyond her normal marketing role during this COVID-19 period, taking on more responsibility and tasks. She has shown ongoing loyalty, hard-work attitude and a professional approach to everything she does. In addition to managing the ongoing and heavy workload of our multi-marketing team and working across five different countries, she has played a crucial role in critical and complex business development functions, and she has done it with flair. She delivered all corona signage to our stores quickly and professionally, and re-launched our intranet during these times as a tool to further connect with our associates. Because of her, and her team, we look good 24/7 in APAC. She is an amazing person, always delivering the extra mile in an easygoing and fun way.”

HMSHost Vietnam Managing Director Simon Stansfield, above. Many staff members sent letters thanking him and the company for their professional training, and taking care of their lives, mental health and financial wellbeing during the pandemic. An example was this note from Autogrill VFS team member Le Doan Phuong Thao: “I would like to sincerely thank the company leaders for always being by our side and supporting all employees during this difficult time. There will be many difficulties ahead but I believe that the company will overcome and develop strongly. I hope that we will continue to work together in the future. Once again I would like to thank very much. Wishing you and your family a lot of health and peace.”
