SSP partners with Cornish pasty pioneer to open at Gatwick

UK. Travel food & beverage specialist SSP Group is partnering with a Cornwall-based bakery which bills itself as the “world’s oldest Cornish pasty producer” to open a new outlet at Gatwick Airport. Warrens Bakery, which runs 80 stores in the UK, opens this month in 300sq m with seating for 138 people.

The bakery’s range of Cornish pasties, which are made to traditional recipes and hand crimped at its bakery in Penzance, will be a staple of its offer. The café will be serving up British classics for breakfast, lunch and all-day snacking including breakfast baps, Belgian buns, sandwiches and pastries.

The team at the new unit have been trained at Warrens Bakery’s Centre of Excellence. SSP said that this will ensure “excellent service and full knowledge of the heritage and production methods behind Warrens Bakery’s signature products”.

Founded in St Just near Land’s End in 1860, Warrens Bakery was a winner at last year’s British Baker’s Baking Industry Awards, where it was named the UK’s No.1 Craft Bakery.

Warrens Bakery Chairman Mark Sullivan said his company was delighted to partner with SSP and Gatwick Airport. He added: “Our iconic British brand lends itself ideally to this location, offering customers quality food at affordable prices, as well as in-store theatre, based on our 1860 heritage.

“As the UK’s leading craft bakery and the world’s oldest pasty producer, we ensure a friendly, engaging experience for all ages and demographics, where quality and taste are assured. We’re increasingly recognised as Britain’s trusted ‘hot food café and hot savoury specialist’, where customers can opt for a full meal, dip in for coffee and a treat, or simply grab and go for the flight.”

SSP UK & Ireland CEO Richard Lewis said: “Combining our expertise of the food travel market with Warrens Bakery’s award-winning range of baked goods, we will meet growing passenger demand for convenient, artisan food and beverage options at the airport.

“This is an innovative addition to our portfolio of outstanding food & beverage brands, and we look forward to working closely with Warrens Bakery to provide a new dimension to our bakery offer.”
