Special delivery: Lotte Duty Free sends out red envelopes for Chinese New Year promotion

SOUTH KOREA. Lotte Duty Free is in the midst of its Chinese New Year celebrations, offering a series of discounts and gifts to customers both online and in-store.

The retailer’s festive promotion, which began on 18 January and runs until 3 February, takes the concept of ‘hongbao’ as its theme. Hongbao is the Chinese custom of putting money in a red envelope and giving it to loved ones when celebrating events.

A lucky draw event on Lotte’s WeChat account is offering customers the chance to win a variety of Year of the Rooster prizes, including coins, stamps, gold pendants, widescreen TVs and luxury watches, by taking part in a picture contest.

On its official Weibo, Lotte is giving hongbao red envelopes worth CNY2,017 (US$293) and hongbaos worth between KRW8,000-800,000 (US$6.93-693) to 217 customers who post New Year messages and share the content. The vouchers can be used in Lotte’s online store.

Overseas customers can also participate in the online events, Lotte said.

If customers visit Lotte Duty Free stores after participating in the events, they will receive a KRW10,000 (US$8.66) prepaid card to spend, the retailer said.

A New Year special sale and prepaid card presentation events are also being held in various parts of Lotte’s stores. In its main store in Seoul, a lottery event is offering customers up to KRW1,000,000 (US$866) in prepaid cards for purchases worth more than US$1,000.
