Shinsegae Duty Free goes for gold in Year of the Pig

Why the ‘Golden’ Pig?

Among the sexagenary cycle, also known as the Stems-and-Branches or ganzhi, 2019 falls on the gihae year, or the Year of the Golden Pig.

The sexagenary cycle consists of the combination of a colour and an animal and this year is a combination of yellow and pig, or the golden pig. – The Korea Times

SOUTH KOREA. To welcome in the forthcoming Year of the Golden Pig, Shinsegae Duty Free has launched what it dubbed a “massive giveaway” for foreign customers, including gold bars, spoons and mini-pigs made of gold.

The Year of the Pig is believed to bring fortune and luck in Asian countries.

Shinsegae Duty Free’s online store is conducting a lucky draw for customers and offering an array of prizes, including a Chow Tai Fook gold bar (about 18.75g), spoons and mini-pigs made of gold.

Newly registered customers, or those who were born in any Year of the Pig and spend over US$500, or shoppers who spend more than US$1,000 in total with three friends will receive a golden pig, a hongbao (red envelope), purchasing credits and other prizes.

Customers who satisfy all three conditions and are then chosen through a lucky draw will receive rewards equivalent to their round-trip airfare to South Korea.

All that glitters is gold in the Year of the Pig.

To wish customers good luck in the New Year, the online store is hosting a ‘Golden Pig Lotto Event’ which offers a range of opportunities based on purchase amount and date of online viewing.

Customers can receive up to ten lottery tickets when they spend over US$250 or check the online offer every day. Prizes include a 3.75g golden pig, Alipay’s hongbao, and purchasing credits.

Shinsegae Duty Free is offering the seasonal incentives both through its online platform (pictured above) and physical stores (Myeong-dong, Seoul flagship pictured below).

The action isn’t confined to online. Shinsegae Duty Free store customers who spend more than the qualifying US$1 through to 21 February have the chance to win a range of Chow Tai Fook gifts. These include a 100g gold bar for the first-placed scratch card winner, a gold coin (about 15g) to fifteen second-place winners, and KW30,000 (US$26.60)  pre-paid cards to other winners.

Shinsegae Duty Free is also offering a range of golden pig-themed seasonal items, including Givenchy clutch bags and Montblanc notebooks.

“Celebrating the Year of the Golden Pig, Shinsegae Duty Free prepares an event to wish customers good luck in the New Year,” a Shinsegae Duty Free spokesman said.
