Shannon Airport Authority is seeking a partner for its travel retail operation |
IRELAND. Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) is seeking a joint venture partner to manage its travel retail business under a ten-year contract. The company is issuing the opportunity today via The Moodie Report, with a formal advertisement to appear online and in this week’s edition of The Moodie Report e-Zine (out on Thursday).
As reported, since 1 January 2013 Shannon Airport (the birthplace of duty free) is operating as a fully independent and autonomous airport following its separation from the Dublin Airport Authority.
The company noted: “SAA now wants to enter into a joint venture relationship with a quality international travel retail group for the management of the SAA Travel Retail store, at Shannon Airport. It is envisaged that the JV would be a separate legal entity.

“SAA’s ambition, working with its new JV partner, is to use the JV’s skills and resources to bid for travel retail opportunities in other international airports and potentially provide consultancy services to developing airports.”
The new travel retail store will operate under the name Shannon Duty Free.
Timetable
The planned start date of the new JV is 1 July 2014. Pre-qualification should be completed by 12 February, with a tender pack issued by 14 February to qualified parties.
The return date for submissions of the tender pack will be 21 March, with short-listed parties to be notified by 2 April. They will then present to Shannon Airport in the week from 7-11 April. A final decision on a JV partner will take place on 22 April.
SAA noted the importance of Shannon in Irish and world aviation, including the establishment of the world’s first airport duty free shop, developed under the guidance of Dr. Brendan O’Regan.
The company added: “SAA is proud of its heritage and “˜Irishness’, which is reflected in the fact that up to 30% of the sales in the travel retail store are of Irish origin.
“SAA is also the first airport in the world, outside of the Americas, to offer Full US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) preclearance facilities to airlines travelling to the USA. This facility allows passengers to pre-clear all formalities for US Immigration, Customs and Agriculture. This provides additional opportunities to retail to CBP passengers.”
