Scorpio to relaunch Montine watch brand to inflight

UK. Scorpio Distributors is relaunching the Montine brand of watches at the TFWA World Exhibition this month at a brand new stand (Stand number: Mediterranean Village P8).

Established in 1971 by Bruce McGuire, the Montine brand was a bestseller inflight, selling over half a million units per year during the 1980s. This prompted the Montine advertising slogan – “˜one sold every minute around the world’. It was recently reacquired by Scorpio after being dormant for a number of years.

Scorpio Distributors Managing Director Stuart Mcguire believes that now is the perfect time for Montine to be reintroduced into travel retail. “The brand was successful due to its classic styling, quality and very accessible prices,” he said. “These are the pillars upon which we have built the new collection and are perfect for today’s consumer in the tough economic climate.”

The range aims to fill the gap in the market for a classic and stylish watch brand at an entry-price level – prices for individual watches will start from £15.00. Initially targeted at the inflight sector, sets will be developed for groundshops in due course.

Bruce McGuire commented: “We launched the brand in the 1970s to an audience who was just getting used to international travel for the first time – I still have the first invoice mounted on my wall for sales to Danair on 11 March 1971, the same day as Stuart was born. Whilst 1971 is a long time ago, we were selling to a world in recession, and yet created success.

“Today’s world is not so different, and consumers are looking for the same things now: price, quality and style. It will make me very proud to see these watches on sale on airlines again. I am sure that once again, we can sell “˜one every minute around the world’,” he enthused.

After a successful soft launch in Singapore, Scorpio is also officially introducing the Swiss brand Jacques du Manoir, for which it has exclusive distribution rights for inflight and travel retail sales worldwide.

Manufactured by the Boegli family, these Swiss watches have a history that goes back four generations. The modern Jacques du Manoir watches have been made for the past two decades and include wrist-watches, pocket watches and pendant watches, both quartz and mechanical. Scorpio will initially be offering 20 skus starting at £125.

Alongside these new launches, Scorpio will be refreshing its existing portfolio of watches including the top-selling Aviator and Avalanche ranges, along with new collections for Esprit and Puma.

New for Pierre Cardin in 2012 is a collection of three, four and six coffrets combining earring and pendant/earring sets. Prices start at £25.
