Rodenstock boosts CDFG partnership as it gears up for recovery in China

All aboard the Hainan express

The May edition of The Moodie Davitt Report Magazine profiles Hainan’s burgeoning offshore duty free industry and examines its likely pivotal role in leading the Asian travel retail sector’s recovery.

This special report, written by Martin Moodie and themed ‘All aboard the Hainan express’ will profile China Duty Free Group’s acclaimed CDF Mall and other Hainan travel retail locations and explore why the province is so critical to many of the world’s leading brands.

The May edition will also carry a special ‘Road to Recovery’ report, edited by Dermot Davitt, which assesses how travel retail will look – and might best prosper – once it emerges from the biggest crisis in its 73-year history.

Eyewear specialist Rodenstock has boosted its partnership with China Duty Free Group (CDFG), as it sets sights on Hainan Island for a post-COVID-19 recovery.

The brand said it has enjoyed a long collaboration with CDFG, driven by the popularity of its Porsche Design brand with Chinese shoppers.

Porsche Design is now available across CDFG’s digital platforms, and on CDFG’s WeChat platform.

Rodenstock noted the positive return of domestic travel in China, and highlighted CDFG’s offshore duty free business in Hainan as “the heart of the first shoots of recovery” in the travel retail channel.

Rodenstock Director Global Retail Eyewear Petra Eckhardt-Koestler commented, “The travel retail market needs support from all of us right now and we are delighted to be working with our esteemed partners at China Duty Free Group to support their efforts at bringing duty free shopping back to Chinese consumers.

“Our Porsche Design line has been enjoying great success, and more and more shoppers and retailers are recognising the value of sunglasses within the market. With its popularity and position in the market we are thrilled to be doing what we can to help with the recovery alongside CDFG.”

The company’s Porsche Design brand has proven particularly popular with Chinese shoppers and is now available on CDFG’s various digital platforms

As reported, on 22 March Hainan’s provincial government announced a CNY150 million (US$21.2 million) rejuvenation plan for the island’s beleaguered tourism industry with duty free shopping at the heart of its plans. Two new store openings in April represent a core component of that rejuvenation, particularly with the all-important May holidays coming up.
