Revival gathers pace: Hong Kong International Airport surpasses 20% of 2019 passenger levels in November

CHINA (HONG KONG). Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) served 1.05 million passengers in November, just over a fifth (21%) of the five million recorded in the same month of 2019. The figures, reported by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), are however up by +769% against November 2021.

The relaxation of inbound and outbound travel restrictions, which have been further eased this month, led to significant increases in Hong Kong residents and visitors using HKIA, compared to November 2021.

Traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Japan experienced the most significant increases compared to other regions, AAHK noted.

Over the first 11 months of the year, the airport served 4.1 million passengers, marking a year-on-year increase of +238.5% but the result is just 6.23% of the equivalent 2019 number.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume increased year-on-year by +226.6% to 4.2 million.

Earlier this week, as reported, Hong Kong’s number one airline Cathay Pacific revealed passenger numbers for November which are broadly in line with its home airport.

The airline carried a total of 526,827 passengers during the month, an increase of +652.1% measured against November 2021. The figure represents a -79.9% decrease compared with the same month of pre-pandemic 2019.
