Retail performance buoys Beijing Capital International Airport revenues in first half

CHINA. Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) posted a +22.9% surge in first-half concession income from retailing (mainly duty free) to RMB721,412,000 (US$111.5 million). This was among the highlights of a strong commercial performance in the period to 30 June.

Total concession revenues climbed by +15% to RMB1,484,879,000 (US$232 million), while the airport reported a +13.5% year-on-year rise in non-aeronautical revenues, with the figure hitting RMB2,158,677,000 (US$338 million).

In its interim report BCIA said the retail performance could be attributed to “growth in international passenger throughput with high consumption abilities and sales promotion of the duty free business”.

Sunrise Duty Free has been the long-time concessionaire for duty free (in departures and arrivals) at BCIA. As reported in June, following a tender China Duty Free Group was awarded the eight-year contract for Terminal 2 while Sunrise Duty Free captured the T3 concession. That move in turn paved the way for CDFG to acquire a 51% stake in Sunrise Duty Free (though only its Beijing operations. Sunrise also remains in charge of operations and management in Beijing -Ed).

BCIA’s concession revenues from advertising were RMB532,857,000 (US$83.4 million), representing an increase of +8.9% compared to the same period the previous year. This was mainly due to increased fees for some renewed advertising agreements, noted the airport.

F&B concession revenues in the half were RMB123,713,000 (US$19.3 million), a leap of +26.4% year-on-year. This was mainly due to the increased passenger throughput, especially international passengers and additional sales points.

Total group revenues climbed by +8.8% year-on-year to RMB4,614,365,000
(US$723 million).

International passenger traffic (including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) grew by +5% to 12.26 million with domestic traffic up by +1.3% to 34.3 million.
