Austin-Bergstrom International Airport spokesman Jim Halbrook told The Moodie Davitt Report: “The terminal expansion is a vital part of Austin’s airport expansion projects underway to keep up with current growth, prepare for future passenger increases, accommodate larger jets and expand air service for Austin.’’

The terminal expansion will add nine gates and increase the airport’s capacity to 15 million passengers annually.

It has been reported in the Austin media that airport officials are already looking at the next phase of expansion. They recently held a fourth and final public workshop on the Airport 2040 Master Plan. This could include an entirely new south terminal connected to the Barbara Jordan Terminal by a long bridge.

This next phase plan for 32 new gates and two million square feet of new terminal/remote concourse space would also include a new outdoor plaza and concession area.

Austin City Council is expected to discuss the Airport 2040 Master Plan at its 1 November meeting.
