Prospects for Sanya duty free store reopenings rise as COVID cases tumble

CNSC in Sanya is one of three duty free stores in the southern city to have been closed since early August

CHINA. An early reopening of duty free stores in Sanya now seems increasingly likely as new locally transmitted COVID-19 case numbers continue to tumble.

With the vital Golden Week holiday period now just around the corner, getting the stores open is of critical importance to travel retailers and their brand partners.

As reported, the stores have been closed since 4 August (HTDF and CNSC in Sanya City) and 5 August (China Duty Free Group in Haitang Bay) due to the outbreak on the island.

Just 36 new infections (excluding asymptomatic cases) were reported by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China yesterday (out of 349 across Mainland China).

The stores in Haikou (China Duty Free Group, GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS) have been open since 28 August.
