Pretty in pink: GDF Plaza turns on the style for Golden Week

GDF Plaza is back in the pink following the COVID blues of August

CHINA. On 30 September, Hainan Development Holdings-owned Global Premium Duty Free (GDF) Plaza launched a special event themed ‘The First Hainan International Duty Free Shopping Carnival·Meet GDF.

The event, timed to coincide with National Day Golden Week from 1 October, is designed to stimulate duty free consumption and promote travel retail recovery after the hit caused by August’s COVID-19 outbreak in Hainan.

The GDF Plaza event, a major component of the First Hainan International Duty Free Shopping Festival, runs until 10 October.

Pretty in pink

The sunken plaza outside the store is dressed in a riot of pink, with a pink-hued swimming pool, swing, coconut trees, beach chairs and other elements. This is attracting many ‘pink-lovers’ and other tourists to take pictures and post on social media platforms, GDF Plaza said.

“I especially came to participate in the Night with GDF Plaza,” said one shopper. This pink world is so fascinating. I can enjoy the freshly made cocktails and on-stage band performance. It all makes me feel the city has come alive again after the COVID-19 hit.”

“We are promoting the recovery of the duty free market in Hainan through holding‘The First Hainan International Off-shore Duty Free Shopping Carnival·Meet GDF’ during the National Day holiday,” a GDF Plaza spokesperson said.

GDF Plaza now offers more than 500 brands launched during the Phase I and Phase II development of its Mova Mall store, spread across some 30,000sq m.

Phase III will be opened to the public later this year. GDF Plaza said this will advance the retailer’s mission to become a new duty free shopping landmark with international influence in Hainan. It will also help accelerate the Hainan’s status as an international tourism and consumption centre in China, the retailer added.
