Penn Brewery and Fraport Pittsburgh bring Oktoberfest flair to Pittsburgh International

USA. Pittsburgh International Airport is due for a “Deutschtown” makeover on 20 September as Penn Brewery teams up with Fraport Pittsburgh to celebrate its first Oktoberfest.

Live music, traditional food and drink, Bavarian specialities and fun activities, all with a German/Bavarian twist, are included in the event, which its organisers hope will offer Pittsburgh International passengers a taste of Munich’s famous beer festival.

Penn Brewery is in for a new Oktoberfest look on 20 September.

Allegheny County Airport Authority Chief Commercial Officer Eric Sprys said: “Oktoberfest is celebrated throughout our region and across the globe. We’re excited to host our first official Oktoberfest with one of Pittsburgh’s largest and oldest craft brewers and bring a bit of Deutschtown to the airport.”

Penn Brewery, which was established in 1986, is one of the pioneers of the American craft beer movement and aims to tell the story of Pittsburgh’s European immigrants through its craft beer and homemade cuisine. It opened its first airport brewpub at Pittsburgh International Airport earlier this year.

The Concourse A outlet will have a festive décor, seasonal brews and an amended menu until the end of October. Dishes include pork shank, schweinebraten, borststuk (brisket), roasted pork with sauerkraut and marble potatoes, and strudel bites with cinnamon cream.

Penn Brewery staff, wearing colourful alpine hats, will offer guests complimentary pretzel bites and mini-strudel bites at the restaurant on 20 September. They will also provide information about Oktoberfest happenings at the Penn Brewery flagship unit in the North Side.

Penn Brewery Co-owner and Managing Director Linda Nyman commented: “We’re thrilled to host our first Oktoberfest at the airport. It’s a longstanding tradition at Penn Brewery. Our goal is to give travellers a true taste of Pittsburgh, along with a little dose of local history.”

Pittsburgh’s Autobahn (The Karl Lukitsch Band), its members dressed in full lederhosen, will play Oktoberfest music, while a Fraport Pittsburgh ‘willkommen’ team will greet passengers with samples of soft pretzels. Gift certificates for shopping and dining at the airport will be available.

Fraport USA President and CEO Ben Zandi said: “Oktoberfest is all about giving passengers a great experience at the airport as we celebrate our region’s heritage. We’re especially pleased to join with Penn Brewery in bringing this tradition to the airport.”
