CHINA. Two new terminals have opened at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which saw its first flight depart to Beijing on Sunday. The terminal buildings are initially linked to three runways, giving an initial capacity of 40 million passengers a year.
The partners in the design and construction of the project are China Airport Construction Group Corporation, ADP Groupe’s architectural arm ADP Ingénierie and China Southwest Architectural Design.
The two first terminals designed represent an area of more than 600,000sq m and provide 83 aircraft parking stands. The buildings are connected on landside to four high speed railway lines and two metro lines, through a large intermodal ground transportation centre.
Planned future developments at the airport will include a second area in the south for two more terminals and additional runways, which would bring the ultimate capacity up to 90 million passengers a year.
With the new airport in Jianyang district, approximately 50km east of downtown Chengdu, China’s fourth largest city by population will have a dual international airport system of two complementary airports, mirroring the set up in Shanghai and Beijing.
Terminal 1 will accommodate mainly international flights, while Terminal 2 is fully domestic. The two buildings are distinct but share some architecture with a connecting airside corridor.
The airport said its hospitality standards in the terminals are “up to the best international standards levels for a world-class passenger experience”.
As reported, China Duty Free Group (CDFG) and The Design Solution jointly developed designs for the airside commercial area in the terminal. CDFG won a contract to operate 4,000sq m of retail space.
