Moodie Davitt WeChat platform breaks through the 3,000 followers mark

CHINA. The Moodie Davitt Report’s WeChat Official Account has broken through the landmark 3,000 followers landmark.

The Moodie Davitt Report is the only international travel retail media title to offer a WeChat platform. The service, published four times a month, complements the already strong and growing Chinese readership of our English language service.

Moodie Davitt WeChat is curated under the direction of Penelope (Penny) Zhou, our Hong Kong-based Chinese Editor, and company Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie, also based in Hong Kong, China. They are supported by two further staff in Mainland China.

Our constantly updated coverage of the COVID-19 crisis in Hainan of recent weeks took on a positive hue yesterday as the Haikou duty free stores (including GDF Plaza, pictured) reopened amid falling case numbers

Martin Moodie said: “We are very proud to have reached this landmark, which underlines both our commitment to the Chinese market and the positive response from our readers in China. I moved to Hong Kong, China in July 2020 and we subsequently launched our WeChat platform in March 2021 and reached 2,000 followers in mid-January this year.

“The +50% growth in our readership levels in such a short period since then has been hugely encouraging, an achievement that we believe reflects the quality, diversity and accuracy of our content and The Moodie Davitt Report’s reputation in China. Penny Zhou has done a tremendous job in developing the platform and curating such an accessible and content-rich platform.

“We have since bolstered our coverage with the July launch of The China Travel Retail Report, a quarterly eZine, which has generated a very positive reaction.

“We have also had tremendous support in China from Hainan Hinews Media Co, our strategic partners in Hainan, whom we thank for their tremendous professionalism on the ground in the province. We help bring their coverage to the world and they help bring our content and knowledge to China. We also continue to enjoy close cooperation too with Mirko Wang and his team at Jessica’s Secret; Kan (Arthur) Cong and his associates at Globuy; Jason Cao at DutyFree Expert; and a wide range of travel retail and aviation stakeholders.

“Many of our stories – both on WeChat and our English-language website – are exclusive. We are the only international B2B media, for example, to have covered the temporary shutdown of the Hainan offshore duty free market in recent weeks (now reopened in Haikou); to have reported on China Tourism Group’s recent media conference related to its secondary listing in Hong Kong; and to detail the groundbreaking work of the China Tourism Association Duty Free Industry Professional Working Committee.

Another exclusive in the international media as we reported how leading Chinese travel retail stakeholders had met in Haikou to discuss matters of common interest and to drive the industry forward

“We are also very grateful for the support of the Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development (Hainan IEDB), which has done such an outstanding job in hosting the China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo) over the past two years.”

In May 2021, Martin Moodie’s extensive coverage of the Hainan offshore duty free sector was recognised by the Hainan International Media Center’s Overseas Communication Officers programme, when he was appointed to the honorary role of ‘Overseas Communication Officer’ by the Hainan International Media Center.
